I have a 1 year old Dell laptop with an internal modem. The modem has worked fine for the first 9 months...?
...but it recently stopped working in the last 3 months. When I run modem check it says that the modem is present but no dial tone can be found. Can anyone tell me the cause for this and how I can fix it without a lot of hassel/ expense? Thank you!!
The phone lines are all okay-- we can use the desktop internet fine, it's just the laptop that seems to be having problems. And we bought it new from a rent-to-own place, but I don't think there is a warranty....! 
Odds are the modem went bad. You have to keep in mind that you can get a power surge through a phone line as well as a power line and that phone lines rarely have surge suppressors on them. Modern design lets the modem die but saves the motherboard. Borrow (or buy) an external modem (either serial or usb), load the drivers and you should be back on-line.
