my sister has a cable modem tell me how to setup a wireless router from start?
my sister lives next door to my in the same apartment complex on the ground floor level. she had cable tv with fast access internet modem. tell me from the begining how to set up a wireless router to work off her modem. the router is a lynsksis g model i have the card installed in my cp with the antenia already.
Step 1: Install the Router Between Your Cable/DSL Modem and Your LAN.
Follow the recommended procedures for setting up your LinkSys router. In most cases, you will simply need to unpack the unit, connect a CAT-5 cable from your Cable Modem or DSL modem and the WAN port of the router, and connect your PC(s) or other computing devices to the LAN ports. Next, connect your eyesite 140 to one of the available LAN ports on the rear of the unit.
Step 2: Check the Public Internet or WAN Address for Your Site.
Use your web browser to check the configuration of the router. This is done by entering the address of the router into the URL field of your browser. Typically, the default address of the router is 192.168.1.1. Enter the password to gain access to the router (see the LynkSys instructions for accessing the unit for further details). Click on the status tab to see the current WAN address for your site. The address shown will be the address to use when dialing into the system from a remote location.
Step 3: Create a UDP Port Map to Your Local eyesite system or PC.
Establishing a connection through the firewall (your router is also a firewall) by dialing out does not require any further configuration. However, if you plan to receive incoming calls, you will need to set up port mapping as described here. The firewall is designed to protect your networked computers and other network devices from unauthorized access from the WAN (Internet) side of the firewall, so unless the router is configured further, outside systems will not be able to establish a connection to your eyesite 140 or eyesite for Windows software.
The router has the ability to map PORT numbers to local LAN addresses for specified types of IP traffic. Thus, using the public IP address discovered in Step 2 and the port address of the eyesite 140 an incoming call can be forwarded (routed) inside the firewall without compromising your network. To create a PORT mapping for your eyesite 140 click on the ADVANCED tab. Next, click on the forwarding tab, in the EXT. PORT fields enter a port range (we often use 50000 but any number above 9999 should be fine) in both fields. Enter the IP address of your eyesite 140 (NOT the public address from Step 2) in the IP Address field on the same line and then click the enable block. Click the APPLY button. You should get a confirmation message that your changes were applied.
Step 4: You are Now Ready to Go!
Now that you have created a PORT map for your local system it is possible for systems outside the firewall (either another eyesite 140 or eyesite for Windows) can connect to your eyesite 140 . The address they should use is the Public IP address as discovered in Step 2 followed by the PORT number as configured in Step 3. In this example, the eyesite system would be dialed by using the address 66.56.217.77.50000.
